Orange County Office
Orrick’s Orange County office is located in one of the foremost technology centers in the United States. Home to more than 600 R&D-based biomedical and information technology businesses, Orange County is the center of innovation and entrepreneurship in Southern California.
In 2002, Orrick opened an office in Orange County to serve the unique local business community, and more than 20 Intellectual Property advocates and trial lawyers have quickly become an integral part of the region's innovation network. Our IP team sponsors strategic organizations that build innovation infrastructure in Southern California, such as OCTANe and Digital Hollywood. OCTANe helps to create, support and fund innovative biomedical and information technology companies in Southern California, and Digital Hollywood is one of the premier industry conferences with more than 15,000 executives in the film, television, music, home video, cable, telecommunications and computer industries regularly attending numerous regional events throughout the year.
One of the primary advantages of our Orange County team is our in-depth understanding of IP in our clients' industries, including medical devices, biotechnology, electronics, information technology, software, semiconductors, telecommunications, and gaming and entertainment. Nearly all of our IP lawyers in Orange County are admitted before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and hold degrees in one or more scientific or engineering fields, with some holding Masters and Ph.D. degrees. A number of our Orange County IP lawyers also have significant first-hand experience in research and applied technology in client industries before entering the practice of law, including local lawyers who have previously served as a network and telecommunication engineer, a semiconductor product engineer, a data storage engineer, a business software engineer and a computer programmer. Our Orange County IP team also includes a former USPTO Patent Examiner in electrical and electronic arts and in-house patent lawyer for a life science research and clinical diagnostics company.
Another key advantage is the international scope of our IP lawyers in Orange County who work in concert with our firmwide IP practice to achieve clients' business objectives by protecting, prosecuting, licensing and managing their patents and other competitive intellectual property assets around the globe. Our Orange County team is multilingual, including Mandarin, Punjabi and Spanish, and currently has numerous active IP matters for clients in Asia and Europe, many of which involve prominent cases before the U.S. International Trade Commission. Orrick's Orange County lawyers are well connected to the local knowledge, experience and contacts of their colleagues in 21 offices throughout the world.
With the direct support of Orrick's unique Silicon Valley-based Emerging Companies Group, Orrick's Orange County office also provides a team of lawyers dedicated to the special counsel needs of biomedical and IT start-ups, entrepreneurs, venture capitals and other participants in the IP-driven emerging companies and life sciences business environment. Our focus on emerging companies means Orrick provides efficient, cost-effective and creative service from lawyers who understand the business impact of their legal solutions. Protecting life sciences companies’ ideas and inventions is critically important at every stage of development. Orrick regularly counsels life sciences companies during the inventive and patenting processes to strengthen the validity and scope of their patents, procure domestic and international patent rights, develop IP strategies and manage their IP portfolios.
Our Orange County office also provides clients with a White Collar Criminal Defense and Corporate Investigations practice led by a former Assistant United States Attorney who also served, for three years, as the Deputy Chief of the Southern Division of the Central District of California. With 10 years of fraud and public corruption prosecutions experience, he received a "Director's Award," one of the highest honors bestowed on federal prosecutors. Orrick’s White Collar Criminal Defense and Corporate Investigations group boasts many respected criminal defense lawyers, including 12 former Assistant United States Attorneys who are highly regarded among a global client base for their work on a broad range of complex white collar and regulatory matters, including antitrust, bank fraud, tax fraud, securities fraud, insider trading, corruption, racketeering and government contract fraud. The White Collar Criminal Defense and Corporate Investigations team leverages the resources of more than 300 litigators combined with dedicated legal assistants and staff in extensive discovery efforts, internal investigations and preparations for trial, and administrative and congressional hearings.
Across the firm, seamless client service is Orrick’s number one goal. When needed, our Orange County lawyers call on the substantial resources of Orrick's other U.S., European and Asian offices to provide clients with the comprehensive experience, advice and support needed for domestic and international transactions. Orrick is a preferred advisor to local and international companies with inbound and outbound business activities that require sophisticated cross-border legal solutions.
