Congratulations to Orrick partner Daniel Rubens, named today a “Best LGBTQ+ Lawyer Under 40” by the National LGBT Bar Association. The award recognizes 40 LGBT lawyers under 40 who have distinguished themselves in the profession and demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBTQ+ equality.
Danny, part of Orrick’s new partner class of 2019, has devoted hundreds of hours of pro bono service to social justice causes, particularly issues involving LGBTQ equality. He has worked closely with organizations such as the New York Legal Assistance Group’s LGBTQ Law Project, and is active in Orrick’s diversity and inclusion efforts, including our New York office’s LGBTQ inclusion network and mentoring of the firm’s junior LGBTQ attorneys.
Over the past year and a half, he has been the lead attorney on amicus briefs in two closely-watched cases involving wedding vendors who denied services to same-sex couples based on religious objections – the Masterpiece Cakeshop case in the U.S. Supreme Court and more recently the Arlene’s Flowers case pending in the Washington State Supreme Court. In both cases, he drew attention to the corporate law consequences of permitting the business owners to seek to exemptions from anti-discrimination laws, using his experience in corporate and appellate law to support the position of the same-sex couples involved.
Danny joined Orrick as an associate in 2015, and previously clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The Bar Association will recognize him in August at the 2019 Lavender Law & Career Fair.
