Orrick Partner Discusses New EU Data Protection Regulations

RFG Weekly Roundup
June.09.2016

Orrick's Christian Schroder, Head of the firm's IP/IT & Data Privacy Practice Group in Germany, recently shared his thoughts on the latest E.U. data protection regulations with RFG Weekly Roundup.

Christian noted that, "in the future, the number of companies outside the E.U. that fall under the scope of the E.U. data privacy laws is going to increase. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will apply, for example, to data processing activities of data controllers or data processors with an establishment in the E.U. In addition to that, businesses worldwide that wish to operate in the E.U., provide services and goods to residents in the E.U., or monitor the behavior of such residents, will need to comply with the new law since an establishment in the E.U. is no longer a requirement for the applicability of the GDPR."
