Deal Flow 5.0: A Guide to European Tech Trends

2 minute watch | March.24.2025

This video is part of our Deal Flow 5.0 Conversation Series featuring Team Orrick – Europe. Check out the full series here.

In Deal Flow's fifth anniversary edition, Kirsten Connell of Octopus Ventures joined Orrick’s Raph Crouan and Jamie Moore to preview the insights we’re delivering for founders, tech companies and investors.

  • Raph: Orrick is at the core a firm that cares about entrepreneurship and the venture capital ecosystem.

Jamie: As a market leader in the space, we thought we'd use that data to enable us to inform Deal Flow. Deal Flow started a little over eight years ago and relies on over 80 data sets to provide deep and knowledgeable insights into what market trends are.

Kirsten: The Deal Flow report is such an excellent resource for myself as a fund manager. We really want to try and keep our finger on the pulse. What's happening in Europe, what's happening across multiple different funding rounds, what do the legal structures look like at the moment? What are upstream top tier investors looking for when they're investing in a company? All these things are hugely important for our founders.

Jamie: So this is the fifth year that we're doing Deal Flow, and in this anniversary edition we have gone bigger and better on the data. We used over 10,000 data sets, to get deeper into matters such as AI, clean tech and life sciences. We are predicting market trends for 2025, including secondaries, investor-friendly terms and whether or not founders are retaining a more balanced position on negotiations. Deal Flow is like no other report because we access data from all of our European ecosystems from France, Germany, Italy and the UK, but also provide a comparative analysis with what we're seeing in the U.S.

Kirsten: So as a pre-seed investor, when we're on a cap table, we want to set the founder up for success, help them be in the best possible position to raise their follow on rounds. And so if we can offer them really sound advice, because we've got this sort of bird's eye view that Orrick has provided us with, that's incredibly helpful.

Raph: This is an incredibly exciting time for us to be able to communicate to you the extent of our expertise and how we've been helping the European technology ecosystem to grow alongside our practices.
