James Hargrove, an English lawyer and specialist in international arbitration, has joined Orrick as a partner. James was previously a partner at Eversheds-Sutherland. He will be based in Orrick’s Geneva office and also work out of the London office.
James is the latest addition to Orrick’s growing international arbitration practice, headed by Charles Adams, the former U.S. Ambassador to Finland who joined the firm last year.
James has helped clients resolve numerous arbitrations and litigations involving the tech and telecoms, commodities and trade, energy, construction and financial sectors in London, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and other jurisdictions. He also has a particular track record in Russia and CIS-related disputes. He is a member of the Swiss Arbitration Association, ICC, IBA, LCIA and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and has extensive experience litigating before the UK High Court.
“I have known James for more than decade and am delighted to add a practitioner of his exceptional caliber to our team,” said Charles.
“Orrick’s global footprint, strength in dispute resolution, distinctive sector-driven approach and commitment to a premium international arbitration practice make it a very attractive platform” James said. “I greatly look forward to working with the global team to continue to grow the firm’s international arbitration practice.”
James joins a 20-lawyer international arbitration team with members in offices in Europe, North America and Asia. Last month, the firm announced the promotion of Karsten Faulhaber, who is based in Dusseldorf, as a partner in the group. James is the 21st partner Orrick has recruited to its European platform since 2016, including new talent in tech, M&A and private equity, finance and antitrust.
“We opened our Geneva office in 2015 to be a hub for our International Arbitration practice and it’s exciting to now take the next step in growing the team with the addition of James,” said partner Vanessa Liborio, head of Orrick’s Geneva office and a rising star in international arbitration.
Global Arbitration Review ranks Orrick among the top 20 leading international arbitration firms worldwide. The firm was also ranked a top five law firm in Geneva by The Lawyer for litigation and arbitration in 2016.
