Ian Hawkes is a Managing Associate in Orrick's Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice in the Washington D.C. office, where he focuses on a broad array of commercial disputes, in addition to advising with respect to threatened litigation and other counseling engagements. His practice covers litigation in state and federal courts nationwide.

Ian's practice focuses on defending against class action litigation, mass torts, and environmental litigation. He has also represented leading consumer goods companies in confidential arbitrations involving multiple appellate arbitral tribunals and confirmation proceedings in federal courts nationwide. Ian also has an active pro bono practice, where he has assisted clients fleeing gang violence in petitioning for asylum to the U.S.

  • Ian’s past experience includes serving on teams representing:

    • A leading consumer products company in complex, multi-defendant litigation seeking to impose public nuisance liability for marine plastic pollution in California, as well as in connection with a similar lawsuit brought by the New York Attorney General seeking to impose public nuisance and strict products liability for plastic pollution in a New York river.
    • Several global food and beverage companies in complex litigation matters challenging supply chain practices and product labeling.
    • A global food and beverage manufacturer in a $500M breach of contract arbitration regarding distribution rights for a popular energy drink, which resulted in a global settlement following our initial victories in the first phase of the arbitration.
    • A provider of emergency air ambulance services in connection with a False Claims Act investigation.
