Yumiko Ohta, partner in the Orrick's Tokyo office, is a member of the Employment Law Group. Yumiko focuses mainly on employment law advice as well as various corporate transactions including compliance, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, litigation and general corporate transactions.

Yumiko also has knowledge related to international trade such as customs rules and export controls.

Before joining Orrick, Yumiko was an associate at Tanabe & Partners and advised clients in corporate transactions and employment law as well as represented clients in civil and family cases. She has experience serving as a statutory auditor for Japanese corporations. Prior to practicing law, she worked at Mitsubishi Corporation for seven years. While there, she was involved in LNG projects and other global business.

    • Assisted various American Apparel Manufacturers in securing a ruling upholding the validity of a wrongful termination lawsuit, as well as leading a collective bargaining with a labor union party to reach an amicable solution.
    • Assisted a non-Japanese Hospitality Company in successfully obtaining a non-prosecution decision through criminal defense in a suspected violation of Labor Standards Acts; Orrick also provided advice on the integration employees during the acquisition of a new hotel.
    • Assisted a Japanese Venture Company with the strategic reduction of their workforce, leading to a successful restructuring in Japan.
    • Advised a Major American Private Equity Fund in relation to the implementation and operation of the "Highly Professional System".
    • Assisted a Major American IT Company in their internal fraud investigation and harassment investigation, etc.
    • Assisted a Mobile Content and Software Development Company in relation to confidentiality and invention agreements following an M&A.
