BACKGROUND
“Big data” is changing our economy. It has allowed Amazon, Google, Facebook and many others to redesign traditional business models and to create new or improved products and services with greater utility for consumers and often at very little cost. But big data does not stop there. It has begun to also change more traditional sectors of the economy such as energy, telecommunications, banking, insurance and transport.
As big data is becoming more important, European competition authorities have started to take a more critical look at its role in competition. In particular, the German Bundeskartellamt is conducting a high profile investigation against Facebook, and the French Autorité de la concurrence is reviewing computer algorithms and AI software. Both authorities have also undertaken joint projects regarding competition law and data.
At this seminar, representatives of the two authorities will inform us about their work and provide insights into their administrative priorities in the digital economy. Attendants will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn how antitrust and big data will affect their business or the business of their competitors, customers and suppliers.
