Working Together to Make an Impact Around the World
Giving back inspires us.
From California to Beijing, Paris to Düsseldorf, our lawyers and staff work together to make a positive impact on our local communities. We do this through Orrick Cares, our award-winning community responsibility program.
We encourage every team member to take one extra day of paid time off each year to volunteer for an Orrick Cares activity, community event or nonprofit. Some reflect longstanding partnerships with local community organizations, while others are new initiatives launched by members of our team with the firm’s support. Below are some of the ways we make a difference in our communities.
Community Giving
We raise money together for causes in our local communities through our Change for Charity initiative – an idea from an associate in our London office. Last year we supported 14 organizations globally, including food banks, educational nonprofits, children’s advocacy efforts, animal shelters and Doctors Without Borders.
Disaster & Humanitarian Relief
Team Orrick raised more than $300,000 together last year for disaster relief following devastating wildfires in Hawaii; deadly earthquakes in Morocco, Libya, Turkey and Syria; and humanitarian relief in the Middle East. We distributed the funds to organizations members of our team identified.
Honoring Veterans
Our teams volunteer to assemble care packages for deployed U.S. troops, first responders, veterans, military families, and wounded heroes and their caregivers. And in Wheeling, our team cleans war monuments ahead of the city’s annual Memorial Day ceremony.
Running for a Cause
Orrick team members lace up for races to benefit worthy causes around the world, including running to raise money for breast cancer research and to end economic inequality.
Feeding the Hungry
Our San Francisco and Houston teams both take part in local Food From the Bar campaigns, and our New York team has long partnered with the West Side Campaign Against Hunger to support its Thanksgiving meal campaign.
Helping Kids Learn
We have long-standing partnerships with schools in underserved communities, from Harlem’s Storefront Academy to Sacramento’s Oak Ridge Elementary School to San Francisco’s Bessie Carmichael Elementary School.
Pride in Wheeling
Our Wheeling team has implemented several inspiring community projects, including creating and organizing an annual citywide cleanup event called Pride in Wheeling to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and promote inclusivity in the city.
Coastal Cleanup
Each year, our Bay Area teams and their families and friends volunteer to clean up Ocean Beach as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, organized by the California Coastal Commission.
Running for a Cause
Organized by our London office, members of Team Orrick take on a 300+ mile cycling challenge each year to benefit a pro bono partner organization focused on helping asylum seekers and refugees. Our 2024 ride covered four countries in four days.
