Orrick Advises Aesculap AG in One of the Largest University Spin-Offs in Germany

Aesculap AG has closed an investment in Neuroloop GmbH. Neuroloop GmbH is a spin-off of the Central Department for Technology Transfer of the Albert-Ludwig-University in Freiburg and shall, levering research work carried out by the Institute for Microsystemtechnic (IMTEK) and the University Clinic Freiburg, develop neurostimulators which can, inter alia, be used to reduce blood pressure. The transaction is one of the largest corporate venture capital investments in a university spin-off in Germany to date.

"With its participation Aesculap gained a beachhead in the functional neurosurgery which is an increasingly important part of the neurosurgery field and which is expected to see rapid developments market over the next years" said Professor Dr. Boris Hofmann, Team Manager Business Development with Aesculap. Boris Hofmann had scouted this opportunity for Aesculap and developed the project for the last two years together with Dr. Jens von Lackum, Head of Personnel and Legal Divisions.

Aesculap, a 100% subsidiary of B. Braun Melsungen AG, is one of the leading global suppliers of products and services in the medical technology branch.

Orrick had been engaged by Aesculap for a corporate venture capital transaction for the first time.
