I thrive on solving complex problems and working with clients in new sectors or industries. I work with public and private companies, SPACs, SPAC sponsors, venture capital firms and investment banks focused on the life sciences and high-growth technology sectors. I'm involved in a broad range of corporate legal engagements for high growth technology companies, including IPOs, follow-on public offerings, private and public company securities law compliance matters, public company disclosure obligations, de-SPAC transactions, SPAC IPOs, venture financings and mergers and acquisitions. I also regularly advises public and private companies and their boards of directors on corporate governance issues.

  • What inspires you about working with tech companies?

    My parents were entrepreneurs but were always limited by their capital resources. I strive to ensure my company clients are well-capitalized and my investor clients are able to deploy capital efficiently - I always work to find creative solutions to make sure that happens so companies can make awesome things happen.

  • Where do you find inspiration in life?

    Nature. I am a big fan of watching and trying to understand the ways in which the natural world transforms and recreates in an endless cycle. Regrowth and adaptation are great ways to approach many things in life!

  • If you weren't a tech lawyer, what would you do?

    Lego designer. I'm probably not that creative, but I'd like to think I could make it happen.

  • What is your ideal weekend?

    I love to spend time with my family and doing anything outdoors with them - sports, camping, biking, swimming, anything! An ideal weekend would be hanging out with my kids doing a hike and then going to a nice dinner with my wife.

    • What inspires you about working with tech companies?

      I enjoy making a positive and strategic difference in the paths of the people and high growth tech companies; and knowing that they, in turn, can change the world.

    • What inspired you to become an emerging companies and venture capital lawyer?

      I've been an avid computer programmer and gamer since my childhood, put up some of the first web pages in the early 1990's, and have always been focused on changing the world through technology. I've always loved new technology and this was a natural fit.

    • Where do you find inspiration in life?

      In my family and kids.

    • If you weren't a tech lawyer, what would you do?

      I would either be a college professor, a science fiction writer or a professional football spectator.

    • What is your ideal weekend?

      Hanging out with my family and doing whatever maximizes the smiles.

      Martha Verhaelen

      I focus on advising young technology companies and their investors. I advise start-ups from their incorporation through their first financing rounds into the growth phase, as well as on internationalization projects. I work with venture capital, as well as corporate venture capital investors on start-up financing projects.

      • What inspires you about working with tech companies?

        What inspires me about working with technology companies is the potential for innovation and the opportunity to contribute to a positive impact in the present and future. The wide range of topics makes the career incredibly intriguing and dynamic.

      • Where do you find inspiration in life?

        Watching and dancing ballet. I love the opera in Düsseldorf for instance.

      • If you weren't a tech lawyer, what would you do?

        I would be a ballerina or a wildlife conservationist to save the planet. I could follow my passion for ballet or incorporate my love for nature and animals and contribute to environmental protection even better.

      • Tell us something we'd be surprised to know about you.

        I am a certified ski instructor. I am authorized to teach children as well as adults.

        After many years as a conventional corporate M&A and private equity lawyer, I encountered a chance to embark on a fresh professional journey in venture capital and technology companies. I discovered a vibrant and thrilling world full of people with lots of enthusiasm looking for guidance in navigating the legal complexities of doing business from a start-up.         • What inspired you to become an emerging companies and venture capital lawyer?

          Working with emerging companies and in venture capital requires creativity and the ability to come up with quick and innovative solutions to problems that seem simple but are often very complex. Finding the best solution is always very satisfying.

        • If you weren't a tech lawyer, what would you do?

          A doctor, namely a diagnostician

        • Tell us something we'd be surprised to know about you.

          Once I used to be the lead pianist in a rock band, and you wouldn't believe how long my hair was at that time...

        • What technology are you most excited to see develop?

          Artificial intelligence is both exciting and frightening. It has the potential to bring enormous advances to every aspect of human life, but we will need to learn how to use it most effectively for the benefit of the people. I believe everybody wants to see how it will unfold in the coming years.

        • What is your ideal weekend?

          My ideal weekend is with my family, hands down.

        • Tell us about a favorite book, work of art or piece of music?

          Bruce Springsteen's music brings me joy, fun and comfort. "Backstreets" has accompanied me through many moments in my life, and after so many years it still manages to evoke deep feelings.

        • What's your mantra?

          It's not what you do, it's who you do it with.
